How Many Types of Plug and Socket Design Are There?

Most likely that there are at least 15 different variants for plug and socket design by country. They are named in alphabetical order starting with the letter A. The origin and use of each one differs from country to country. Therefore, it becomes inevitable to meet with inconvenience when traveling from one country to another. As mentioned above, there are about 15 known different types of plugs and sockets. The plug and socket design listed in alphabetical order and summarized as follows;

Type A

Mainly used in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan. As you can see on the picture, it has two pins and it’s not grounded. This  socket compatible with plug type A and almost always 100 – 127 Volts.

Type B

Mainly used in the USA, Canada and Mexico. As you can see on the picture, it has 3 pins, two of them are flat and one is round and it’s grounded.  This  socket is compatible with plug types A & B and almost always 100 – 127 Volts.

Type C

Commonly used in Europe, South America and Asia. As you can see on the picture, it has 2 pins and it’s not grounded. This socket is compatible with plug type C and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type D

Mainly used in India. As you can see on the picture, it has 3 pins and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug type D (partial and unsafe compatibility with C, E & F) and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type E

Primarily used in France, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia & Czechia. As you can see on the picture, it has 2 round  pins, and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug types C, E & F and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type F

Used almost everywhere in Europe & Russia, except for the UK & Ireland. As you can see on the picture,  it has 2 round  pins, and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug types C, E & F and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type G

Mainly used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Malaysia  and Singapore.   As you can see on the picture,  it has 3 pins, two of them are horizontal and one is vertical and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug type G and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

 

Other Plug and Socket Designs by Country

Type H

Used exclusively in Israel, the West Bank & the Gaza Strip. As you can see on the picture, it has 3 pins, one of them is on the bottom and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug types C & H (partial and unsafe compatibility with E & F) and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type I

 Mainly used in Australia, New Zealand, China and Argentina. As you can see on the picture, it has 2 or 3 vertical pins; 2 pins: not grounded / 3 pins: grounded. This  socket is compatible with plug type I and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

Type J

 Used almost exclusively in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As you can see on the picture, it has 3 triangle pins and it’s grounded. This socket is compatible with plug types C & J and almost always 220 – 240 Volts.

L Type

Used almost exclusively in Italy and Chile.  As you can see on the picture, it has 3 pins placed from top to bottom and it’s grounded. This socket is almost always 220 – 240 Volts.
