The History Of Forks, Knives, and Spoons: How Did They Originate?

While researching the history, I realized that the most striking information was about the fork. The reason is that its use is later than the knife or spoon. I think in ancient times it was thought that the fork was not a very important thing. The Greeks were the first to use it. In the 10th century, the Byzantines and in the early 1500s the French started to use it. Americans realized its importance even later in the 18th century.

The use of knives is slightly different. When we look at historical events, it is seen that it was generally used as a weapon. Its use on tables coincides with the early 1300s. Sometimes it is even forbidden to use it on tables with the idea that it increases violence or causes unwanted events. King Louis the 14th of France introduced various prohibitions in the 1700s.

The spoon is the oldest historical one in this group. In the past, many different things were used instead of spoons. Seashells are one of them. However, it modernized over time and reached its current use during the Roman period. The raw material from which it is produced has changed according to time. The first spoons made of soil were followed by those made of wood. Today, we can see spoons made of materials such as gold, silver, or titanium.

Historically, the use of forks, knives, and spoons in Turkish culture began during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. The tradition that started in this period was previously thought to be inappropriate for our culture. In some sources, it is stated that this tradition was formed especially with the establishment of relations with Europe. In particular, the influence of the French on the history of cutlery is mentioned. It has become a tradition starting in Ottoman palaces and extending to public tables. And it has become one of the most important table elements of our time.
